For years, traditional phone lines have been the backbone of business communications across the UK. However, that technology is now reaching the end of the road – and the switch-off could affect your business in more ways than you might think.

The UK’s legacy telephone network, known as the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN), is being permanently retired, with the final switch-off scheduled for 31 January 2027. Any business still relying on traditional analogue phone lines or ISDN services will need to move to a digital alternative before then.
What is the PSTN Switch-Off?
The PSTN is the copper-based network that has carried telephone calls throughout the UK for decades. As the network becomes increasingly outdated and expensive to maintain, the telecoms industry is moving to modern IP-based services that use broadband and fibre connections instead.
From January 2027, traditional PSTN and ISDN services will no longer be available. Businesses that have not migrated risk losing services that depend on these connections.
It’s not just about phone systems
Many organisations assume the switch-off only affects their desk phones. In reality, a surprising number of business-critical systems may still rely on analogue lines, including:
- Traditional telephone systems
- Broadband services delivered over legacy phone lines
- Emergency phones in lifts
- Payment terminals
- Alarm systems
- Door entry systems
- CCTV monitoring services
- Fax machines
Many businesses are unaware that some of these services still depend on the PSTN until they carry out a full review.
How long do we have?
While the final deadline is 31 January 2027, businesses should not wait until the last minute.
Openreach has already stopped the sale of many legacy services and is actively encouraging providers and customers to move to digital alternatives. As the deadline approaches, demand for migrations will increase significantly, creating potential delays for businesses that leave planning too late.
The reality is that the time to prepare is now.
What should businesses do?
The first step is understanding exactly what services you currently have and whether any rely on PSTN or ISDN infrastructure.
Once identified, these services can be migrated to modern alternatives such as:
- Hosted VoIP phone systems
- Microsoft Teams calling
- SIP-based telephony
- Fibre broadband services
- IP-enabled alarm and monitoring solutions
In many cases, businesses gain additional functionality, greater flexibility, and lower ongoing costs by moving to digital services.
